The fair map amendment
I'm happy to relay the League of Women Voters, the better Government Association and other government groups announced their fair map amendment initiative. This initiative will dramatically change the way legislative districts are drawn in the state of Illinois.
Under the current redistricting process, politicians have complete control over drawing the boundaries with few restrictions. When the political parties could not agree the balance of power for the next decade would literally be determined by a lottery. While both political parties have benefited from this system the public has not.
The Illinois fair map amendment would be a tremendous step in returning to a system where the voters chose their legislators instead of the legislators choosing their voters. The amendment will open up the process to the public and the media.
The good government groups have a taut job ahead of them they must collect nearly 500,000 signatures from registered voters by the end of April to get the Illinois fair map amendments on the ballot and then they must convince the public to vote for the amendment four to become law.
We need to do all we can to help collect signatures to get this initiative on the ballot. For more information or to download petitions go to www.ILFairmap.com.
